We demand: a dedicated restoration fund for the dead sea

Until now we've gathered:
The dead sea is an irreplaceable nature wonder, national treasure, and the beating heart of our desert. In the last few decades the sea is disappearing before our very eyes. Since the establishment of the state of Israel around 40% of the dead sea’s area has dried up. The waterline has receded by tens of meters and what many of us call “the dead sea” today has not been a natural sea for a long time, but rather an industrial pool meant to serve monetary interests.
The industrial activity, in particular the pumping out of massive amounts of water, is leading to irreversible damage to the sea and the entire area. The new dead sea concession law published by the ministry of finance seeks to continue and deepen this exploitation. If we don't act now there will simply be nothing left to save.
We are demanding of the state – an immediate change in legislation: the founding of a dedicated restoration fund for the dead sea – a significant part of the earnings accumulated by the industrial activity must be appropriated to a fund dedicated solely to the restoration of the dead sea and the surrounding area, and the return of every cubic meter of water pumped out by the factories. The beneficiaries of public resources must be accountable for them. The fund, its purpose and the use of it must be anchored in law, with public supervision and full transparency.
The dead sea is our sea!
Every year sea level drops by around 1.2 meters – equivalent to around 600 olympic swimming pools being siphoned from the sea every day. A significant portion (around a quarter) of this drop can be attributed to the ICL group, under the control of Idan Offer. The company pumps out water from the dead sea, evaporates it in industrial pools and produces potassium from it for international commerce – all the while damaging this utterly unique area with no consequences.
ICL pumps out around 460 million cubic meters of water per year – for free.
Only 35% of dead sea factory profits return to the public.
The real cost of the damage to the environment falls to the public and not the perpetrators.
Our demands
- A restoration fund for the dead sea in the law – part of the profits of the factories will be designated to the restoration of the environmental damages and returning the dead sea to the public.
- Water for water – a commitment from the factors to return all the water they pump out from the sea.
- Taking responsibility – the sea is not a private resource of any company, it belongs to us and our children.
The dead sea is our sea!
